  • It’s definitely possible for Steam games to be DRM-free, especially older ones. https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_big_list_of_DRM-free_games_on_Steam

For those games, you can literally just make a copy of the game directory after downloading it, and back it up somewhere. Just run the game EXE (or equivalent on Linux) to run it, even on a system that doesn’t have Steam installed. Everything you need is in there. That’s all Steam is doing when you ‘install’ a game - downloading its files and extracting them. It also installs any required runtimes like MSVC or .NET, but you can do that yourself too.

Of course, the best idea is still to buy games on GOG instead.

For what it’s worth, a bunch of open source stuff is maintained by Meta, that businesses rely on:

Parts of the Linux kernel, including btrfs, cgroup2 (which is heavily used by Docker and similar technologies), psi, bpf, and a few others.

    PyTorch, used for AI/ML stuff

    PrestoDB

zstd compression library and xxhash hashing library - used by pretty much every database system and a large number of backup systems now

    React, React Native, Relay, etc.

Plus all the AI research and models (like Llama) that’s published publicly with generous licensing policies. Way more Open than “OpenAI”.

  • the cushion beneath the mesh.

Neither my wife’s chair nor my chair has a cushion underneath the mesh. It’s just plastic underneath the mesh, and you can easily wipe dust off the plastic.

This means more stress is put on the strands than for a full cover upholstery.

While that may be true, I’ve had more issues with foam chairs than mesh chairs.

There are some foam + upholstery chairs that are very good though, like the Steelcase Gesture (which rivals the Herman Miller Aeron).

  • Don’t get a chair with cheap foam like that. Get one that uses mesh instead. More breathable, and it’ll last way longer. Ikea may have some. The Staples Hyken is pretty decent for the price, if you get it on sale (<$150).

The Herman Miller Aeron chair is still the best, but it’s very expensive. You might be able to get a good deal at a store that sells ex-office furniture, but a “good deal” for the Aeron is still $500-600. I think there’s some Amazon stores that sell them second hand. If you buy one new, they have a 15 year warranty that covers practically everything. My employer had a pretty big discount on new new ones for home use, from the supplier they use for the office.
